Do you actually need traffic school, defensive driving, or neither?

Similar-looking courses do very different jobs. Which one helps — if any — depends on your state, what you’re trying to fix, and which authority has to accept it.

What happened?

Three different systems, three different sets of rules.

Start with your state

Find your state’s program

State comes first — though purpose, violation, and license type matter too. Each state runs its own program, with its own name, rules, deadlines, and results, and approval doesn’t carry across state lines.

Covers ticket, point, and insurance outcomes state by state, with links to official sources. Dedicated state guides are in progress.

What you’re actually buying

What completing a course can do

Four different results, four different sets of rules. Which one applies depends on your state and on why you’re taking the course — and they are not interchangeable.

A course doesn’t fit every citation — serious offenses, charges requiring a court appearance, and violations you intend to contest generally fall outside these programs. When contesting it makes more sense.
